Emma and Richie's Big Viking Funeral

Emma and Richie are breaking up, but luckily they’ve decided to mark the occasion by throwing a symbolic Viking Funeral for their relationship. Things don’t exactly go to plan when they accidentally bring two Vikings, the warrior Arik and his funeral sacrifice Freya, back from the dead.

With their breakup ceremony on hold, Emma and Richie begin the near impossible task of dealing with Vikings. Emma is determined to teach Arik right and wrong. Richie tries to convince Freya that her dreams of being a Viking warrior in a future life can come true in the present. Over one long, stormy night Emma, Richie, Freya, and Arik learn about video games, the god Odin, and the sacrifices we make for our friends.

This show was performed as part of BNT's 2019 fall one act festival. All four one act plays performed were directed by different directing teams. In the week following tech, the four casts performed together for the first time, learning to work together as a unit. As the closing show of the festival, Emma and Richie's Big Viking Funeral went out with a bang and left audiences laughing and crying.

This one act play was written by Jacob Surovsky and submitted to BNT. We chose this play out of a handful of promising shows. The script was then worked on continuously by our literary team in collaboration with Jacob. BNT chose BNTeam member Daisy Tichenor to direct. Daisy, along with BNT producers and other one act directors, spent days hosting auditions and narrowing down the cast to 4 talented actors. The BNTeam went to work starting rehearsals and productions meetings. The production team had an interesting challenge on their hands, designing and producing 4 shows all within one space to be performed in sequence.

bringing a story from script to stage is never an easy task. However, what is unique about BNT productions is that as the rehearsal process begins, the script is still continuously changing. Not only is the literary team working on it, but now designers, directors, and actors all can help to shape the story on that fundamental level. The script is always the playwright's however, and the suggestions made are up to their discretion.
